Concerns on Home School Science

I’m a 21 year old male. Currently studying a Business with Accounting Bachelors Honours Degree in England (I won’t say which Uni). I hold 280 UCAS points. Furthermore, after thinking about it deeply for the last month, I intend to study an English Language & Communication Bachelors Honours Degree from September via an Internal Transfer.

Now here’s the problem. I hate the degree I’m doing. In the back of my head, I only chose to do this degree because I’ve always been too afraid to stand up to my Dad and tell him that I wish to make MY own decisions myself, and that I’m no longer a kid. He doesn’t exactly MAKE me do business, but if I told him that I wanted to study media for example, he’d just tell me something like “no, forget it, media is not a good degree”, and go onto emphasise every single possible reason why I should do Accounting (i.e. good job opportunities).

Now, you might be thinking, “for goodness sake, you’re 21, why don’t you just man up”. But, it’s not that easy. My Dad is Nigerian, and he used to beat me as a child whenever I misbehaved, thus consequently, I’m actually scared of him – though I don’t really show it. (Laugh if you will, but I’m very serious).

My Dad and Mum don’t pay my fees as I’m supported by a student loan. I’m meant to be revising for my 3 remaining modular exams as I type, but I can’t even bring myself to do it. Normally, when I dislike something, I still try and do my best (e.g. Science in Secondary School). But Accounting is a whole different kettle of fish – I just hate it so much that I’m probably already on my way to failing this first semester (only passed 2 out of 7 modules so far).

And to add insult to injury, if by some miracle I managed to stand up to my Dad (My Mum is not a problem), and by some miracle he approved of my plans, and also the course tutor accepts me…I’ll have to pay roughly 250% higher tuition fees than what I would have paid if I was applying this time last year (all fees go up in the UK from 2012).

I’m actually living away from home for the first time (since January), and thus, I’d be having more time to study. But how do I motivate myself to study for something I hate doing (Rhetorical).

I’m aware of the fact that by transferring to a different degree, I’ve essentially thrown nearly £9000 out the window (student loan), and wasted a WHOLE year, not to mention the fact that everyone in my life will think of me as a layabout. But at the same time I know I just can not continue any longer. I don’t want to be miserable for the next 50 years of my life doing something I hate – but I just can’t muster up the courage to face my Dad.

I’m 100% sure of this, as I’ve spent the last 1 month thinking about it thoroughly. I just want some advice and encouragement, if any. Please.
